May is a great time to travel and here are 5 of our top picks for the month.
A scorching climate and scores of beautiful golden beaches make Mallorca a year-round favourite. However, the range of events and festivals taking play in May make this time of year an especially good time to visit.
Highlights include the Pollença Wine Festival, the Moors and Christians mock battle in Soller, and the medieval faire in Capdepera.
Corfu’s Kassiopi is the largest village in the northeast of the island – boasting a picturesque setting and a rich history. In May every year the village holds a wine festival in the harbour, bringing in locals and tourists from all over Corfu to take part in the celebrations.
Hong Kong’s annual Dragon Boat festival commemorates the exiled minister and poet Qu Yuan. The tradition of boat racing started after local people rushed out in their boats to save Qu Yuan as he drowned himself in the bay after becoming disillusioned with the government during his exile.
These days though it’s a much more positive event, with locals and tourists enjoying a carnival of boat racing, eating and drinking local delicacies.
Buddha Jayanti in Delhi is celebrated on the full moon in the month of Vaisakhi which is usually between April and May. The festival is a day for greeting and celebrating where you can expect dance performances, rituals and a celebration of colour.
In May Bratislava Castle hosts the annual Slovak food festival, which attracts over 20,000 visitors. The festival is free to attend, and with a full programme of events which include musicians, a cooking school, children’s attractions, and contests – it really is a community event that is not to be missed.
